At the beginning of 2014, MCHC launched a new project to interview and record the recollections of early Mason County residents. How many times have each of us commented, "That was a great story! We need to get someone to record the account, before the story is lost."
Oral history is the recording of personal memories. Such records are a fine way to find out what past events mean to people in addition to those "just the facts" found in formal history. Personal stories add much to the facts found in news accounts, legal documents, or business records. Oral histories can even challenge the facts. Of course our memories may not be totally accurate, but the remembrances add to the flavor and paint a visual picture of times gone by.
Enter the lawyers. Recorded accounts are considered "Intellectual Property", owned by the interviewee; therefore, before the MCHC can transcribe and release the accounts to researchers/general history enthusiaists, the following form must be completed by an authorized representative of the MCHC. We encourage anyone knowing an early resident of Mason County, who wishes to share stories, please contact the MCHC.
